Laos is a small land-locked country in Southeast Asia traversed by the Mekong River and known for its mountainous terrain. We entered Laos by crossing its border with Thailand, and from here we took a two day slow boat trip down the Mekong River. Our slow boat adventure took us from Huay-Xai close to the Thai-Laos border to Luang Prabang. We spent our time reading, playing games, doing schoolwork and drinking cups of tea whilst enjoying the beautiful scenery.
As we journeyed down the river we stopped at two villages on the banks of the Mekong River. The people have a very simple lifestyle. They live in thatched wooden houses raised on stilts, living off the river and their crops, and all seemed very cheerful. Children ran about barefoot, water was collected from taps dotted around, and chickens, ducks and pigs wandered freely. The villages are isolated, they see few visitors and therefore it provided a very authentic insight into the normal way of life for these Lao people.
PHOTO JOURNEY THROUGH TWO LAOS VILLAGES
Here are some more photographs of the village children.
The second village we visited was similar to the first except that here they supplement their farm income by making woven scarfs and embroidered bracelets for visitors like us to buy. As we arrived and disembarked the boat we were greeted by several young girls selling embroidered wrist bands. As we walked into the village the women and some older children rushed to set up their products for us too see. We couldn’t resit and all ended up with wristbands, whilst I also bought a scarf.
And a few more photographs of children in the village…
