A Boat Down the Li River

The Li River flows 437 kilometres from Cat Mountain, north east of Guilin, to the Pearl River system and eventually into the South China Sea. We were to experience 83 kilometres of its beauty between Guilin and Yangshuo. It is said that ‘one hundred miles of the Li River, is one hundred miles of art gallery’ and they are right. The river winds through spectacular karst scenery with stunning views at every turn. A view near Xingping is depicted on the 20 Yuan note (our featured image).

The boat ride took four hours and included lunch on board. During the summer months forty boats carrying about 100 passengers each leave Guilin every day for Yangshuo, big business.
